ALICIA , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?

When we talk about the risk of opening Alicia Tran's, Atelier + Design house, it starts with defining what an Atelier + Design House actually is, because it’s a departure from the traditional model people are used to.

Most see ‘Design’ as a service or a retail experience. We view it as a working lab of interior architecture, and have located this in the back of the Design House. Taking up the front 3/4 of the space is the ‘Atelier’ is where the art happens. It’s a place where blue-chip fine art and tier 1 & 2 furniture isn't laid out as a vignette, but integrated into an experiential & editorial curated gallery.

The risk was in introducing a disciplined, global perspective to a region that has a very established, traditional coastal vocabulary. We didn’t want to ‘decorate’ homes; we wanted to bridge the gap between the Gulf Coast and design hubs like Milan or Paris. We’ve curated a portfolio of exclusive global brands and master crafts-people that you typically won’t find outside of a few major fashion capitals.

So the risk wasn’t about competing with what’s already here. It was about creating a dedicated platform for bespoke, museum-level intention. We are betting on the idea that there is a sophisticated client here who doesn’t want a ‘look’- they want a love letter to craftsmanship. They want interior architecture that is quiet, sculptural, and executed at a world-class standard.

By building this, we’re providing a local home for a global sensibility that, until now, usually required a flight to NYC or Europe to source.

As always, we appreciate you, ALICIA TRAN, for sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

My path to opening Atelier + Design was a deliberate, 20 year evolution. I spent the first decade of my career mastering the world of fine art, and the second mastering the complexities of interior architecture. I didn’t want to just ‘enter’ these industries; I wanted to master each discipline independently before choosing to synthesize them into a single, cohesive practice.

What We Provide & The Problems We Solve:

We provide a seamless integration of blue chip fine art and high-performance interior architecture. We solve the problem of fragmentation for clients with high-stakes assets- yachts, Gulf-front estates, and luxury condos. Usually, a client has to manage an art consultant, an interior designer, and an architect separately. We bring those conversations under one roof with a singular, global vision.

What Sets Us Apart: The Exclusive Global Partnership:

What truly sets us apart is that we have built a platform for brands that, until now, required a trip to Milan, Paris, or NYC to experience. We are the exclusive partner dealer on the Gulf Coast for the world’s most prestigious names: Boffi | e DePadova, Baxter, Paola Lenti, Flexform, Meridiani, Amini, and Piet Boon, among others.

These aren’t just manufacturers; they are artisans who have spent nearly a century perfecting their craft in leather, upholstery, wood, glass, and lighting. Just like us, these houses are equally obsessed and non-conforming. They don’t follow trends; they set the standard. By bringing these exclusive collections to the Gulf Coast, we are providing our clients with the same level of provenance and architectural discipline found in the world’s leading design capitals.

What I Am Most Proud Of:

I am most proud of this synthesis. I’m proud that we can take a client who has a deep appreciation for a museum-grade painting and show them how that same level of ‘blue-chip’ quality exists in the architecture of their Boffi kitchen or the sculptural form of a Baxter piece. We are bridging the gap between ‘living with art’ and ‘living as art.’

What I Want You To Know:

I want our clients to know that we are here for the long game. We are here for the person who values provenance, discipline, and the soul of the maker. We are bringing a level of global sophistication to the Gulf Coast that honors the heritage of the artisans we represent and the discerning taste of the clients we serve. It’s not just a project to us; it’s an architectural love letter.

What do you, ALICIA, think helped you build your reputation within your market?

My reputation in this market is built on a foundation of unwavering intent. I am one of the few people who can say their career path was never second-guessed or sidelined; I knew I would be a professional in the arts when I was five years old. That wasn’t a hobby for me, it was a calling.

I began as a practicing artist, holding my first show while still in high school. In college, I took that creative energy and scaled it by opening the first progressive art gallery in the area. From there, I transitioned into the contemporary art museum world before eventually launching my own fine art brokerage.

Mastering the art world first was crucial. It gave me the resilience, the eye for provenance, and the creative discipline required for the high stakes world of interior architecture. When I finally transitioned into interior design, I realized I possessed a level of insight that was missing in most projects. I wasn’t just looking at a room; I was looking at the composition, the light, and the soul of the space through the lens of a curator and an artist.

My reputation among my peers and collaborators is rooted in that shared obsession. They see my work ethic and my constant need to evolve, and they recognize it because they operate at that same level of intensity. We aren’t just ‘designing’; we are elevating the environment to match the caliber of the art within it.

I’ve spent 20+ years preparing for the Atelier + Design house. Every gallery show, every museum exhibition, and every brokerage deal was a building block. My clients trust me because they know my perspective isn’t based on what’s ‘on-trend’ this season, it’s based on a lifetime of studying what makes a space truly timeless and museum grade.”

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you, Alicia Tran?

When people ask about my ‘strategy’ for client acquisition, they are often surprised to hear that it isn’t rooted in traditional marketing. My strategy is, and has always been, the work itself.

I have spent my entire life trusting a very specific process: Master the craft, and the results will be unequivocal. I believe that when the quality of the work reaches a certain level of discipline and deep understanding, it creates its own gravity. It doesn’t need to be ‘sold’; it simply needs to exist.

This circles back to the core of the risk I took with the Design House. It is a risk I believe in with my entire being. I’m betting on the idea that if I focus 100% of my energy on the integrity of the architecture, the provenance of the art, and the depth of the relationships, the right clients will find us.

I push myself to be the absolute best I can be, not because of external pressure or industry trends, but because of a profound internal understanding of what the work requires. When you spend 20+ years mastering fine art and interior architecture cumulatively, you stop looking for others to tell you what ‘good’ is. You develop the answers yourself.

My ‘marketing’ is the obsession I share with my artisans. It’s like the precision in a Boffi installation or the way a Baxter piece sits in a room. When you refuse to compromise, you attract clients who refuse to settle. They come to us because they recognize that same level of mastery in their own lives, and they want their environment, whether it’s an estate or a yacht, to reflect that same uncompromising standard.
